Festival Concert - Apollo 5 - This Place Is Holy: from Byrd to MacMillan - Sat 25th July 6.30pm
Beautiful sacred music through the ages from British and European composers sung by this top internationally-acclaimed ensemble.
This programme explores the Catholic music tradition starting with the greatest Elizabethan composers, Tallis, Byrd, including his popular Ave verum Corpus and the lesser known Robert White (Elizabethan Organist and Master of the Choristers of Westminster Abbey) through to contemporary pieces by Paul Smith and James MacMillan, including his well-loved O Radiant Dawn
After a short interval to wander outside on a summer’s evening the music returns to the continent firstly with 16th century music by Franciscan Friar, Lodovico da Viadana, and Palestrina before leaping the centuries with wonderful pieces by Poulenc, Bruckner his Locus Iste, Duruflé Ubi Caritas and finally the wondrous soundscape of Arvo Pärt
One of Britain’s smallest but most dynamic vocal groups of soprano, mezzo-soprano, two tenors, and a bass. The ensemble — named after the ancient Greek god of music — has earned a reputation for its ability to connect intimately with audiences whilst producing a rich, vibrant and versatile sound.
” faultless… exceptional cohesion and effortless style.”
