Amy McElroy - Erasmus: Foolish or Farsighted? - Thurs 23rd July 11.00am

Desiderius Erasmus is arguably one of the best scholars to have lived but who was he, and why is there so much controversy around him?

To some, he was a coward, to others, a hero, but why such differing opinions? He is renowned for his influence on education and religion but were his efforts to reform the Church pure folly, or was he in fact a genius who envisioned an improved religion?

Erasmus: Foolish or Farsighted will discuss how one man who befriended kings and popes became the centre of religious chaos and left a legacy that has echoed through history to the modern day.

Amy is the author of three published books, focusing on the Tudor era: Educating the Tudors (2023), Women's Lives in the Tudor Era (2024), and Mary Tudor, Queen of France (2025). Her most recent book is Desiderius Erasmus (March 2026).She has delivered talks for Wolves Literature Festival, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Anne Boleyn Files, and has appeared as a guest on various podcasts including Tudors Dynasty and Talking Tudors. Amy is currently working on another book, Teaching the Tudors, which delves into the men who shaped the minds of the Tudor monarchs.
