Estelle Paranque -Anne Boleyn & The French Betrayal? (Book signing available) Thurs 25th July 1.30pm

Anne spent her formative years in France. During that time, she became accustomed to the French court and its people. She learnt the French culture, language, and fell in love with it to the point where she became a true francophile. When she came back to England in 1521, Anne Boleyn had no idea what fate had in store for her. By 1527, she had become Henry VIII's object of affection and desire. During that time, she also developed friendships and networks with French agents and diplomats. This talk stems from her latest book Thorns, Lust & Glory.  It reveals how much Anne Boleyn trusted the French with her life and status. She became an alternative French princess. It also discusses the extent to which the French betrayed her in the end.

Dr Estelle Paranque is an Associate Professor in History at Northeastern University London as well as a Research Fellow within the Centre of the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick. She extensively published on the Tudors and the Valois dynasties, Anglo-French relations. She is the author of Blood, Fire & Gold: The Story of Elizabeth I of England and Catherine de Medici (2022) and more recently of Thorns, Lust & Glory: The Betrayal of Anne Boleyn (publication date: 2 May 2024).
