Matt Lewis - The People of the Peasants’ Revolt - Wed 24th July 11.00am

Originally advertised as Helen Carr - John of Gaunt

This talk is a replacement, due to Helen Carr being unable to attend the festival.

In 1381, England came close to a revolution that would have turned society on its head. In the fading glow of success in the Hundred Years’ War, as the aftermath of the Black Death continued to be felt, and a teenager sat on the throne, the people of England snapped. Social and financial issues collided to drive a revolt that was characterised by the government as violent and thuggish. By exploring new research that focusses on the real people involved in the uprising, Matt Lewis will offer a different interpretation of the rebels, their aims, and what their success might have meant for England.
